Leadership and Service: Rosie Cordero-Stutz on Hispanic Perspectives

In this inspiring talk, Rosie Cordero-Stutz speaks with Carolina Melo about her 30-year career in law enforcement, the challenge of being a woman in a historically male-dominated field, and her current commitment to community safety.

1. The Call to Service

  • Early Vocation: Rosie knew she wanted to be a police officer from the age of 5. She grew up watching her single mother work hard to support their family in New York, which sparked in her a deep desire to be “useful” to others.
  • Persistence in the Face of Challenges: She shares a personal anecdote about her training at the academy with a shotgun, where she suffered painful physical bruising. Instead of giving up, she practiced until she mastered the technique, which taught her that even if the process is difficult, discipline allows one to overcome any obstacle.

2. Female Leadership in a Male Environment

  • Change in Perspective: She recounts how, early in her career, she had a supervisor known for being “anti-woman.” Upon analyzing the situation, she realized his attitude came from a sense of paternalistic protection. By understanding his motivations, she managed to earn his respect and became his right-hand person.
  • Clear Mindset: For Rosie, the biggest obstacle is not being a woman, but the perception of others. Her philosophy is: “That is their problem, not mine.” She focuses on performing her job with maximum capability and professionalism.

3. Strategy and Security: “Service, Safety, and Protection”

  • Current Achievements: Under her mandate, the homicide rate has decreased by 20%. Her approach focuses on three pillars:
    • Safety: Keeping crime reduced through precise tactics and operations.
    • Protection: Anticipating new threats, such as cybercrime.
    • Service: Treating every contact with the community with professionalism and empathy, regardless of the severity of the report.
  • Crisis Management: Following the line-of-duty loss of Officer Devan Haramillo in 2025, Rosie emphasized the importance of offering psychological and spiritual support (chaplains) to her agents, normalizing the search for professional help in the face of traumatic situations.

4. Balance and Personal Life

  • Balance at Home: Although she is the County Sheriff, she affirms that at home, she seeks to leave the uniform behind. She enjoys daily tasks like cooking (she loves Dominican “tres golpes”) and maintains a relationship of mutual support with her husband, who is also a retired police officer.
  • Message for New Generations: She invites young people to be patient. She asserts that the positive impact of this profession is built over the years and that it is fundamental to choose a path that truly ignites one’s passion, as that will provide the strength to overcome difficult days.
